After the peaceful, seaside pace of Normandy, three days in Paris (the *work* part of my trip) were an assault on my senses. . I explored as best I could between all-day workshops with my client and business dinners. I expect life/work will lead me back to Paris again, so I’ll look forward to stepping more off the most-trodden tourist paths next time. . At the very least, I can now say I’ve seen both the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.
First *real* CrossFit competition today! A ladies-only year, teams of three, and we competed against teams from boxes all over central Indiana. Loved seeing the turnout and all the inspiring women! @317fit #sweatangelshowdown2019 #sweatangelshowdown
Normandy is a three-hour drive from Paris, so we spent our last night of vacation 90 minutes closer, in Rouen—and I wish we’d had more time to explore. . On our walk to dinner alone, we saw Rouen’s somewhat confused cathedral (looks symmetrical at first glance but is decidedly not on closer inspection) and Gros Horloge (big clock). . Call me morbid, but when I get a chance to go back, I want to spend some time tracing Joan of Arc’s steps (including the ones that led her to her execution in this city). . #rouen #rouentourisme #groshorlogerouen
D-Day sites were the first request of @cknuth13 , and Mont-Saint-Michel was mine. . With history that dates back to the year 708, Mont-Saint-Michel over the centuries became a combination of island, village, fortress, prison, and Benedictine abbey at the top. . When the tide is out, you can walk all around the Mount. At high tide, it becomes a peninsula...and at the highest tide of the month, a full island. . We spent the day traversing its ramparts, climbing endless staircases, and by turns craning our necks upward to see the wonder above and downward to see just how high we’d climbed. . One of my favorite moments of the day was the approach, though: we opted to walk the 1.5 miles from our parked car along the footbridge to the Mount. I loved the anticipation that built as we gradually got closer and closer and started to get a better idea of the wonder of this ancient place. . #montsaintmichel
Pointe du Hoc was a German artillery stronghold seized by a team of U.S. Army Rangers on D-Day. They scaled the 100-foot cliffs as some of the first troops on the ground. . Today, 75 years later, the ground is still littered with craters left from the battle. We spent at least 90 minutes winding our way through the pockmarked landscape, bunkers, and concrete gun foundations. Of all the D-Day sites we visited, this one is at the top of my list as unforgettable. . #normandy #dday75thanniversary
On June 6, 1944 — 75 years ago this year — the Allied forces of the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada carried out the largest seaborne invasion in history. Standing in Normandy—on the beaches where the Allies landed on D-Day and the cemetery where 9,388 American soldiers are buried—is an experience I’ll never forget. . Over two days, @cknuth13 and I visited Utah Beach and its landing museum, Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the Normandy American Cemetery & Memorial, Arromanches-les-Bains, and the Caen Memorial and Museum. I’ve visited a lot of museums, but visiting one, then stepping outside onto the very soil described in the accounts, made history incredibly tangible. . #normandy #dday75thanniversary
